What’s a Pimms?

Oi! It’s not “What’s a Pimms?” it’s “What IS Pimm’s?”

And the answer is: I damn well don’t know.

It’s not brandy. It’s not vodka. It’s not gin. It’s not scotch, although Pimm’s No. 2 was essentially scotch, but has since been phased out of production.

Gorgeous.

From what I can tell, it’s a fruity, gin-like liqueur. Pimm’s No. 1 Cup is the most recognizable variety, and it is generally served as part of a mixed cocktail.

A Pimm’s & Lemonade (Pimm’s + Sprite/7Up/Slice/Sierra Mist) is my drink of choice, but alas, I must usually enjoy it at home.

A couple of years ago, my mom and I were walking home from dinner in San Diego and we passed a British pub. We walked in just to ask the barkeep if they carried Pimm’s. They did. We congratulated the fellow for his good sense and continued our walk back to our hotel, satisfied that we’d found a place that carried the libation.

  1. Why didn’t you stay and have a cocktail? Is it really that strong? Wow!

  2. Actually, mine are usually pretty weak – just depends on how much Pimm’s you add.
And I don’t know why we left, really. I remember the pub was pretty dead around 7:00 in the evening. We must’ve been taken aback by the fact that they carried the drink. S’pose we didn’t know what to do once the bartender said yes! =)

  3. Thanks for sharing! I had not heard of Pimm’s, but it sounds like it’d be fun to try.
